OPM

Mainstream today in music, to me, is quite redundant. A good number of them sound alike with similar messages and using synonymous words. It seems like they’re trying to appease the masses, afraid they would be shunned if they didn’t jump on the bandwagon. Comparing them to underground bands that produce independent albums, it’s sad to see the better bands not get their fair share of the spot light. Such flaring creativity needs to be found and brought into the light but still, it’s only my opinion. In the end, for better or worse, they’re all part of our culture. Can Filipino artists be considered nationalistic even though it's of western influence?

Opm artists can definitely be nationalistic even if it has some western influence. Its the style of music that becomes western. The important thing is the message of the opm bands have that Filipino culture about it. -ej

I think they can still be considered as nationalistic, because their song/tune is the only thing influenced by the western culture but the content is still Filipino

Yes, listening to the same, cut-out style artists can leave one very jaded. Though there are still a lot of brillant pinoy artists who are very nationalistic, like say, Bamboo.

yeah i got your point. we have a lot of talented filipino artists. however, there are still a number who just copy their style of music and even the way they look from the western style of music. maybe it's because they think that through copying the style of western music then they will become more famous than the other filipino artists. that's what filipino artists want: fame. but when it comes to the question of nationalism, i think somehow i'll be on your side.

only a few are in it for the music. that's what being an artist is all about, doing what you love without any pressure for creative freedom.
