how we are affected by the media

The different forms of media have affected this issue in one way or another. Maybe through television, through the radio, the newspaper or the internet, the issue about Filipino Nationalism is somehow affected. How can we say that they are affected? Well, the most obvious reason is that the media has a very big influence over the people all around the world. The things people hear, watch or read from these sources somehow affect their daily lives. There are others who follow trends from these sources and some are just fond of checking out what’s new with what these sources produce and a lot more reasons. What about the media? How do they affect the issue on Filipino Nationalism?

I think that they greatly affect the issue on this because a lot of people patronize these sources. What they see from these sources, they tend to follow them. But what do we really see from the media here in the country? Isn’t it that most of the time, they just follow the trends that are “in” in other countries? When they follow trends, sometimes it’s not our own culture that is shown, it’s the culture of the country they copied it from. Would Filipino Nationalism be evident from that scenario? I don’t think so. Based on these things, if the media would continuously follow trends of other countries, the Filipinos patronizing them would loose their sense of Nationalism because it’s not their own culture that they are able to see or hear from these sources.

If the media would just support encouraging the Filipinos to instill the Filipino Nationalism in them, this issue would be so rampant and I think that there would be change that is going to happen within our country.

Follow the Leader

It makes me wonder how we could establish in ourselves the Filipino Nationalism that we are supposed to have when the one leading our country is only following the demands of the other countries. I am not that against or pro administration but I just realized that there’s something wrong with how they run our country. Everything seems to be so dictated. It’s like they are just following orders from other countries and that’s how they run the country. Everything is like based from another and then we just copy what they do. I’m not really sure but that’s just how I see it. Using my own point of view, with these things happening, I guess that the one who should encourage us to instill that Filipino Nationalism in us, does not have one within them so how could they set a good example to their countrymen??

Services for the Benefit of Others

Being a nurse is the most popular job nowadays in our country. There are a lot of people who are studying such course because they know that it is the job that is in demand as of the moment. Even those who already earned their professional degrees study again to be a nurse. What are the perks of being a nurse nowadays? They are highly in demand here in the Philippines and in other countries as well. They are highly paid for the services they do especially if they work outside the Philippines.

So how do we connect this to Filipino Nationalism? Well, I think that it is connected to such topic because the nurses who are studying in our country do not really give their services to their fellow Filipinos. I am not saying that all nurses are doing such thing but in general, isn’t it that when nurses here graduate they tend to look for jobs in other countries first rather than thinking of serving their own country? They study here in the Philippines but offer their services to other countries. Where is Filipino Nationalism there? I think that there’s none. If these nurses choose to serve their own country first rather than look for jobs outside the Philippines, that’s when I will believe that they still have that spirit of Filipino Nationalism in them. We are all aware that when they work in other countries, they will earn more because they could be paid with higher amounts of money but when you think about it, isn’t that too selfish? I know that we should think about our own needs first before we think about others but can’t we also take into consideration the needs of our fellow countrymen? These nurses could also earn here in the Philippines when they serve here. They could earn but not as much as how they would earn in other countries but if they would just learn how to budget and use their earnings wisely, they could be successful in that field without leaving their own country. Lastly, what’s so good about that thing is that they could feel happier and fulfilled being able to serve their fellow Filipinos rather than trying to fit in with others in a place elsewhere.

Corruption in the philippines becoming a culture?

Nationalism can really be translated to "love for country" and we filipinos, if we are nationalistic, really should help our country and our community to become a better place and not just pocket our funds. But why is it that everywhere we look we only see corrupt officials, individuals and even our moms and dads who are businessman or part of the government, usually they are corrupt! is this becoming a culture to us filipinos? i hope not! so we should start now. inlfuence the next generation and who knows, with just a helping hand, we all can get away from this "CULTURE" Bye GMA! lets start at that! :D

Lost Filipino Nationalism

What happened to the feeling of being faithfully loving to our country? What happened to the nationalism that we are supposed to show to our country? People nowadays opt to move away from our country and settle down in another place. They try to seek for a better life in a place not within the boundaries of our country. Would they really be able to find something better outside the country? Well, there are many people who became successful when they worked in other countries. They became rich because of the hard work and effort they put into what they earn. While there are also others whose status in life doesn’t even change even if they moved out of the country. Much worse is that there are also other people whose lives became more miserable when they lived in another country. Many things could happen when people try to live in another place. They become successful or not. . But one thing is for sure when this situation arises. Somehow, they have lost their sense of nationalism for our country because they choose to live somewhere else. Think about it, wouldn’t it be better if you just make yourself feel at home and successful in your own country rather than be seen struggling in another?

Education System

The Philippine education system isn’t as nationalistic as it’s supposed to be. First of all the medium that it’s being taught in is primarily English then secondarily ‘Tagalog’. But look at Japan; it uses ‘Nihonggo’ as it’s medium of instruction in everything. If you go to Japan you would find that only a few people speak English there. As we prioritize English as our primary medium of instruction we experience foreign emotions rather than Filipino emotions. For example, graduation ceremonies are recited in English. Signs would have English warnings or notices and a ‘Tagalog’ translation under it. It’s as if that if you know how to speak English properly you’re prestigious in other peoples eyes. Our education system produces graduates who can’t wait to get out of the country and serve elsewhere, leaving the country lacking of human resources. It also can be seen in government policies that pleasing the international community always comes first.

Personal Nationalism

How does one become nationalistic? For me one must love their country as much as they can. Solve problems as they arise instead of looking for who to blame. One need not be in the government to create change, one just needs his passion to change the country towards a brighter future. Electing candidates that are qualified and intelligent enough to do a job, electing those who want to serve others not those who want to serve themselves. Following simple laws by not littering and no j-walking and not bribing nor threatening traffic enforcers with you "connections". This is all i can think for now so post a comment and add what you think is personal nationalism.

Basketball

One of the most if not the most popular sport here in the Philippines. What is it that draws Filipinos to basketball? We already have a physical disadvantage of our small structure because in basketball height is might as my PE teacher once said. Can something of western influence be nationalistic? Shouldn't it be that we popularize our own sports such as 'sipa'? Why is it that we don't give much attention to our national sport? Everyday as i come home from school i see street children playing 'sipa' as well as basketball. What is it in basketball that makes it so popular here in the Philippines compared to other sports?

The Brainwashed Filipinos Abroad

For me not to become biased against Filipino-Chinese, I'll also write something not so quite good about Filipinos especially to those who are brainwashed that Philippines has no more hope that's why they're working abroad.
I am not against those Filipinos who want to work abroad because they want to have a greater pay to support their family. There are still a number of Filipinos who prefer to be in their own country but they just don't have the choice but to work abroad because they really want to support their family. But there's still their love for their country.
I just don't like those Filipinos that after working abroad and they became really well-off then they'll begin to underestimate that the Philippines has no more chance of coping anymore. There are still even many Filipinos who deny themselves that they were born of Filipino nature.
Don't they realize that if they influenced this kind of thinking to other thousands or millions of Filipinos then they are actually helping in making Philippines as a "no more chance" country?

Filipino-Chinese in the Philippines

I am not against those Chinese who grew up here in the Philippines since it's not their fault anyway that their parents or grandparents migrated here in the Philippines; nor am I against those Chinese who really migrated here all the way from mainland China to pursue their business interests.
What I am only against some (not all okay, my bestfriend is a pure Chinese) of these Filipino-Chinese is their underestimation to many Filipinos especially the traditional Chinese families here in the Philippines. I believe that it is so harsh and ridiculous for Chinese parents or grandparents to disown their children or grandchildren if these kids marry Filipinos. And not even just Filipinos, as long as it is outside of their race.
However, since we are here in the Philippines then let's stick to Chinese and Filipinos. Most Chinese parents or grandparents say that Filipinos are poor and Pinoys only want to marry Chinese because of money. Well, there are in reality Filipinos who would want to marry Chinese because of money but this statement shouldn't be generalized. However, there are also who are just very loyal to their Chinese tradition that even if the Filipino is very rich the parents or grandparents will still choose the poor Chinese to be the spouse of their children or grandchildren. But even though this case is not about money, it shouldn't reach to the point wherein they will disown their children or grandchildren if the Chinese tradition is not followed. Do they mean that they prefer their Chinese tradition over their very own children who came from them? Do they also mean that they do not 100% love their kids?
So how do I connect this topic to Filipino Nationalism?
Here in DLSU-M, I think many Chinese students here are in their third generation. And there are still a few who are like their parents or grandparents when it comes to underestimating Filipinos. What I just would like to say to these types of Filipino-Chinese (not all okay, that's why I wrote to these types of Filipino-Chinese) is that "Even though you are pure-blooded Chinese but you were born and raised here in the Philippines so you are a Filipino citizen. Sana naman magpakaFilipino ka rin like Sir James Co." They must also realize that the Philippine country helped them to become rich and if they say that the Philippines will not become rich if not because of them then well, is the Philippines really rich? They should still not forget the fact that they became stable here in the Philippines because of the Philippines that's why they're here in the Philippines.
And I would just like to repeat that I'm not referring to all the Filipino-Chinese here in the Philippines since my bestfriend is a Chinese and around 85% of my friends here in DLSU-M are Chinese. And they're good. They're even more of a Filipino than other Filipinos.

Is Emilio Aguinaldo really better than Andres Bonifacio in wars?

Last summer term, I enrolled in Kaspil2 and my professor was Dr. Mactal. During the module 2 or module 3 I think, the topic that was assigned to our group was about Emilio Aguinaldo and Andres Bonifacio. When we researched in the internet, we found out that it was the group led by Emilio Aguinaldo who always won during battles unlike the group led by Andres Bonifacio. So during class presentation, we said that somehow Emilio Aguinaldo is better than Andres Bonifacio as a fighter. Then Dr. Mactal asked us why do we say so. And we replied it's because the group of Andres Bonifacio always loses during wars. Then Dr. Mactal asked again, "Well, do you know how many enemies Andres Bonifacio has compared to Emilio Aguinaldo even though Emilio Aguinaldo always win during the battles?" Then our group replied that we don't know. What we just know is that the group of Emilio Aguinaldo always win compared to that of Andres Bonifacio. Then Dr. Mactal said to the class, "You know why class the group led by Emilio Aguinaldo always win during the battles? It's because the enemies of Emilio Aguinaldo are only around 10-20 and he has around 200 soldiers? So who do you think will really win in the battle? Of course Emilio Aguinaldo! Now class, in Andres Bonifacio's case is in the other way around. Sometimes Andres Bonifacio's group only has around 20 soldiers and their enemies are around 100 to 200 then definitely there's a great possibility that the group of Andres Bonifacio will really lose in the war! So it doesn't mean that the group of Emilio Aguinaldo is better than that of Andres Bonifacio because we need to take note how many soldiers does each group has and how many enemies there are!"
I learned one important lesson from sir. Don't be biased. Look for facts and information that will prove explanations.

Law?

A few weeks ago I was going to Makati from Gil Puyat via cab. We then had to take a U-turn slot that already beside Roxas Boulevard which the traffic didn't help us get there faster but before the U-turn slot assigned to PUV there were 2 U-turn slots closed and a U-turn slot for private vehicles. On the side for the U-turn slot for private vehicles is a police officer with a motorbike when a taxi took the private U-turn slot. I was thinking to myself, that driver is going to get a ticket, so the police officer mounted his bike then went the opposite direction. Some police force we have here. It's just frustrating to see that justice isn't being served in this country and to add to that the bureaucracy that one has to go through. How can we aspire to be law abiding citizens if those who break them don't get punished?

Filipino Nationalism is complicated

It is not easy to be nationalist, although there are some simple ways that would consider us to be one. But like the saying goes "Easier said than done". These are two simple examples to show nationalism, but however its not as easy as it seems.
For example: most of the people want to favor Filipino goods but in the end, they end up buying imported goods. Another is, stop walking and standing at attention when we heard the National Anthem, but people rather ignore it. We cannot blame these people, since in the first case, they are comfortable with imported goods so it is the the job of local companies to make a strategy on how people would like them. For the second example, in some cases, its not our fault for example, national anthem was set as a ring tone for mobile phones how would you give attention to that specially if you know that the song would not be finished. But as for some case in the second scenario, we still would not mind to stop if we heard it from a morning ceremony of an establishment even if it is not required.
